Cleveland, OH and New York, NY (October 26, 2016) – Today at Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Innovation Summit, McGraw-Hill and Cleveland Clinic announced the development of a new Internal Medicine course for its advanced practice nurse practitioners (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) that uses adaptive learning software.

The course is part of Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to enhance medical education by incorporating the latest advances in learning technology. Initially, the adaptive learning software will be used in an Internal Medicine course in Cleveland Clinic’s Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) and Physician Assistant (PA) Fellowship beginning in January 2017. It is the first in a series of new courses that the Cleveland Clinic intends to roll out over the coming two years.

With this technology, Cleveland Clinic’s own curriculum is coupled with McGraw-Hill's clinical content and is delivered using McGraw-Hill's adaptive SmartBook technology. SmartBook is an adaptive software product designed to help students understand and retain course material by guiding each student through a personalized learning experience. The APRN and PA Fellowship provides APRNs and PAs with critical, on-the-job training, while also assisting them in the study of more than 50 core topics through highly intuitive, self-paced learning modules developed with McGraw-Hill.

“A core group of our APRNs worked with McGraw-Hill to develop course content, allowing us to offer engaging, technology-enabled learning solutions in new and innovative ways,” said Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC and executive chief nursing officer, Cleveland Clinic. “Our nurse practitioners and physician assistants will receive a tailored experience, which will be based on their specific study needs and provide them with a more effective learning path.”

Cleveland Clinic’s Internal Medicine course will leverage McGraw-Hill's adaptive learning technologies to translate traditional learning methods into a highly interactive, personalized experience for each APRN and PA. The SmartBook uses research-driven, machine intelligence to weave together learning and assessment, resulting in a personalized learning pathway. It allows students to focus on the areas that are most important while reinforcing the areas requiring further study. It also provides students with the review they need, allowing faculty members to focus on clinical training.

“Our work with Cleveland Clinic in developing its Internal Medicine course is an example of the kind of relationships we’re looking to build with institutions seeking innovative ways to educate professionals,” said Mark Dorman, president of McGraw-Hill International & Professional. “It demonstrates the flexibility of our digital platforms, which can incorporate McGraw-Hill content together with subject material from others to deliver adaptive, personalized learning experiences.”

McGraw-Hill delivers its SmartBook technology through its Learning Science Platforms group. The SmartBook technology is available to a wide range of corporations and institutions, which can create their own adaptive courses and personalized learning experiences to make learning more efficient and effective.
