Sesame Workshop & Wonders

Bringing Social Emotional Skills to the Classroom

In grades K—1, Wonders is proud to collaborate with Sesame Workshop to provide an integrated approach to social emotional learning (SEL) skills within the curriculum. Positive social emotional learning gives young learners the critical foundation to experience success in school and life with understanding, flexibility, support, and resiliency. Research shows that children’s ability to regulate their own emotions and behaviors affects their ability to build and maintain relationships with others, which in turn has a direct impact on their academic success.

In grades 2—6, Wonders builds on the SEL foundations from earlier grades to support students while they learn how to interact with each other and the world around them. The lessons are carefully shaped to bolster literacy skills, all while supporting social emotional competencies such as social problem-solving, task persistence, empathy, and emotional and behavioral self-regulation.

Social Emotional Curriculum in Wonders

Wonders is organized around three related focus areas to help students learn how to learn. They are social emotional learning, habits of learning, and classroom culture.

Social Emotional Learning

Engage Together is an active learning experience that bridges students’ prior knowledge and skills to the SEL concept.

Explore Together is a “view and do” experience that combines a media-based investigation with collaborative learning.

Connect the Learning through language-rich interactions that transfer students’ understandings to everyday moments and learning at home.

Habits of Learning

The six habits of learning, reinforced throughout the year and across the grades, teach children how to learn and master the skills that will prepare them for college, career, and beyond. They are:

  • I use a variety of strategies to understand.
  • I think critically about what I read.
  • I write to communicate.
  • I am part of a community of learners.
  • I believe I can succeed.
  • I am a problem solver.

Each unit focuses on one habit that will set students up or success; the habits appear in feature boxes in the Teacher’s Edition. In grades 2–6, these habits appear alongside related learning opportunities in your text sets.

Classroom Culture

The Classroom Culture features in the Wonders Teacher’s Edition help to foster the development of your community of learners. These boxes highlight opportunities such as collaboration, restating your community focus and developing a love of reading.
