Assess Student Reading Needs with ROAR:
a K–12 Dyslexia Screener

Introducing an exclusive, research-backed integration to the McGraw Hill literacy portfolio

Identify Early, Intervene Effectively

Identifying students’ reading needs is easier than ever with ROAR®—the Rapid Online Assessment of Reading. Developed by Stanford University’s Reading & Dyslexia Research Program, ROAR is the only literacy and dyslexia screener designed for the entire spectrum of K–12. By assessing foundational reading skills and providing precise, actionable insights, ROAR empowers teachers to support every student’s unique reading needs.

Our research reinforces that children of all ages, not just those in the early grades, can make meaningful progress in overcoming dyslexia and other reading challenges, making it critical for educators to have tools that identify student needs and high-quality curriculum and intervention resources to provide targeted support.

Continuous Support from K to 12

ROAR is the only literacy screener designed to assess foundational reading skills across the full K–12 continuum, allowing teachers to effectively assess and reassess student progress and identify reading difficulties in older students.

Results in 10 Minutes or Less

In just 5–10 minutes, ROAR identifies which students need foundational skills support and in which areas. Screening can be completed independently and administered up to three times per year to monitor student progress.

Backed by Neuroscience Research

Grounded in more than a decade of reading and neuroscience research, ROAR positions teachers as “brain engineers,” giving them the tools to identify student needs and support instruction and intervention. Assessments target specific areas where students often face challenges, such as phonological awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, and more.

Rich Data Insights

ROAR uses a vertically scaled, nationally normed scoring system across K–12, making it easy to compare student performance within and across grade levels. Support categories quickly identify which skills need extra support, are still developing, and are achieved for each student.

Validated Dyslexia Screening

The ROAR Foundational Reading Skills Suite has been validated for dyslexia screening and is already approved for use in several states, including California, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Ohio. These results help educators identify and support students with diverse reading needs like dyslexia earlier and more effectively.

A Total Literacy Portfolio

ROAR will be included in our core literacy programs and available as an add-on for intervention and supplemental instruction.
